Storing molds

Silicone molds can easily withstand temperatures from well below freezing to over 450 degrees, so no problems there.

The only other point to consider when storing molds is that it's thought best to leave them filled with a casting. However I've pulled molds off the shelf that sat unfilled for nearly a decade with no problems at all.

Sorry to disagree with you Oz but the very worse thing you could do is leave a casting in the mold! Urethane castings leach minute amounts of the silicone oils out of the rubber. This is why silicone molds start to breakdown, crumble, tear and stick to castings after a couple of dozen pours. When casting, you want to remove a part as soon as it is no longer flexible to minimize this (it's also very bad practise to leave a poured casting in a mold over night.

Yes, leaving a casting in the mold will keep it from deforming, but careful storage on a shelf or in a box can do the same. I supose you could pour plaster in the mold for storage, but it seems like a lot of extra work to me.

In time, tin based silicone molds will start to break down anyway (several years). Platinum based silicone molds hold up much longer, and aren't so suceptible to leaching.
