What Parameters are Used for Categorizing Flanged Ball Valves?

Ostensibly, flanged ball valves are categorized in numerous classes depending on different aspects.

There are several parameters used for categorizing this type of ball valves, and the main elements include the following;

Ball valve

· Design

Technically, flanged ball valves come in three major designs: floating, trunnion mounted, and orbit ball valves.

A floating design detects elevation changes occurring in liquid-free surfaces hence opening and closing the valve accordingly.

This type maintains the level in the cold water header tank, which is vital in regulating the pressure of the hot water system.

Most of the float flanged ball valves are usually used in domestic systems.

Trunnion mounted design, on the other hand, uses trunnion or lower stem to support the ball that is within the valve body.

In contrast, the ball in the trunnion is fixed and hardly floats.

Furthermore, the ball is centered by the stem at the top and trunnion at the bottom.

The orbit ball valve, however, uses a rotating cam action and rotating motion to create a seal.

Its efficiency is based on the number of turns of the hand-wheel.

· Ball Access

This categorization merely looks at the flanged ball valve from the aspect of point of entry.

Some come with top entry, whereas others come with side entry designs.

In the top entry, the balls are assembled from the upper section of the device.

This allows easy access to the balls and seats, especially during maintenance, without interfering with the valve.

Inside the entry, the balls are assembled from the side section of the device and mostly in two or three pieces body.

· Body Assembly

Classifying under this category is based on the type of housing of the flanged ball valve.

Some of the available designs under this category include the following;

  • One-piece &#; It consists of a single body
  • Two-piece &#; It has two pieces; one at the end connection and the body.
  • Three-piece &#; It consists of two pieces and a body
  • Welded body &#; It is assembled in a wholly welded construction with no leak paths through-bolt connection.

· Number of Ports

This classification is based on the number of ports the flanged ball valve contains.

Ordinarily, the standard design consist of two-port; one inlet and one outlet.

· Bore Size

This classification is based on three different elements;

  • Full bore &#; It is also known as a full port valve. This type has a similar bore diameter as the pipe hence no extra friction.
  • Reduce bore &#; In this case, the valve introduces friction losses in the system. This category of the valve is ideal where turbulence and pressure drop in the flow are not major concerns.

· Seat Type

Flanged ball valves mostly come with either metallic or soft Teflon types of seats.

What Factors Determine Reliability of Flanged Ball Valve?

The efficiency and reliability of the flanged ball valve are largely dependent on whether it is properly assembled.

Of course, incorrect assembly is likely to damage the valve or compromise its functionality in fluid control systems.

Here are the integral elements revolving around the reliability and efficiency of this device;

This is essential in minimizing the possibility of seat deformation, particularly when applied in high-temperatures and highly-pressurized pipelines.

· Valve Selection

It is a vital aspect to consider with design specifications, which meet the temperature and pressure conditions required.

Ensure you look into the seat material since fluids containing abrasive may degrade the seals.

· Degree of Valve Opening

The flanged ball valve is in the category of on/off valves.

Therefore, there is a need for high maintenance and care.

It helps in making the valve open or close fully when installed in a pipeline system.

The valve opens leads to seat erosion and can cause leakage.

Also, when storing valves, ensure that they in a fully open position.

· Valve Mounting

Check the pipe bore to verify that there is no weld spatter, rust, or scale particles remaining inside before mounting the valve.

Locate the flange bolts and ensure they are tightened evenly when mounting the flange end ball valve.

· High Temperature and High-Pressure Service

The manufacturer&#;s recommended pressure and temperature rating should be the appropriate guide for the maximum range the valve can withstand.

Even so, you require reference to valve distributor for assurance of suitability when the ball valve is subjected to various conditions.

· Valve Disassembly

Ensure you remove the fluid completely from the valve internals before dismantling the unit from the pipeline for repair and maintenance.

Also, discharge the pressure trapped in the body completely before disassembling the flanged ball valve.

How does a Flanged Ball Valve Work?

The working principle of a flanged ball valve depends on the specific design.

Floating design is, however, the most commonly used in several applications.

In essence, the ball in this design is suspended in the flowing substance.

The ball stays in position by compression of two elastomeric seats against it.

The shaft attached at the top of the ball allows it to turn in a quarter 90-degree movement.

This enables it to switch the valve from an opening to a closing position effortlessly.

While at it, a load is applied to the ball. The ball is then pressed against its seats whenever the shaft is moving.

When the flange ball valve works under medium pressure, the floating ball moves against the downstream seat.

The valve&#;s seal belongs to the single-sided seal.

Technically, the valve has an upper stem hence allowing the ball to have a light displacement.

When the flanged valve is closed, the ball is pressed against the sealing surface.

This takes place as a result of the action of pressure to release the sealing.

A flanged ball valve with a smaller diameter is suitable for medium and low pressure.

Principally, the floating design is lightweight and economical.

Thus it can suit a bore size of 10&#;.

In case the bore size is more than 10&#;, the valve seats may fail to withstand a heavier ball.

Ultimately, this would lead to the malfunctioning of the flanged ball valve.

5 Factors to Consider When Choosing a Valve

Valves are used to handle a wide variety of functions in controlling the flow of liquids and gases. With so many options available, it&#;s important to look at all of the factors to ensure you are selecting the correct valve for your application.

1. Media Type

The characteristics of the liquid or gas type being controlled will determine the valve material that should be used. When monitoring harsh or corrosive materials, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and perfluoroalkoxy alkanes (PFA) are great choices, as they are able to withstand these conditions. When monitoring pressurized gases, it&#;s important to use metal valves for the highest level of safety.

2. Application Conditions

The selection of the correct valve sizing is the most important step in selecting the right valve for your application. An improperly sized valve can cause operation issues within the valve or elsewhere in the system. In addition to this, determine the temperature, pressure, and flow rate that your valve will be operating under. In most cases, metal valves can withstand higher temperatures and pressures than plastic ones.

3. Valve Function

Determine the need that your valve needs to fill. 2-way valves perform well for on/off control in a system, while 3-way valves can be used for on/off control, as well as for diverting or mixing media. Also, take note of whether your valve will be open or closed the most often. In order to extend the life expectancy, order a valve that is normally in that orientation and changes to the other direction when energized.

4. Actuation Method

Another consideration to be made is how the valve is to be operated. Identify if the valve will be manually hand-operated or if the valve will need to be actuated to turn off and on automatically. If the latter is chosen, decide whether the unit is going to be used with an electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic actuator.

5. Maintenance Requirements

If maintenance needs to be done regularly, ball valves are a great option as they resist clogging and are one of the simplest valve types to service. Ball valves are also available in 3-piece configurations, which consist of two end caps and a body. This allows the main body section to be easily removed for cleaning without disconnecting the end caps from the pipe, preventing the line from being shut down during maintenance.
