The term one stop shop has been around for ages, originating in the s as the concept of consumer convenience was in its infancy. Designed to show a business or location that offers multiple products or services, its safe to say that one stop shops have never gone out of fashion in over 100 years.

Its interesting to see how different markets use different words to say the same thing. In Germany, for example, the phase all from one hand is often used instead, whereas in the UK, everything under one roof is also popular. Convenience is appealing wherever you are in the world!
But what is a one stop shop in todays packaging industry? What products or services are of value to todays customers, whether they be global brands or local partners? And how has the term evolved to be sure that those products are services are suitable for a circular economy?
I believe that a one stop shop in todays packaging industry must integrate sustainability at every stage, while understanding the needs and challenges of customers across the supply chain. As a supply chain director, I have an overview of the whole business, and am in regular contact with our customers as well as the different departments across Pont, from R&D to procurement to logistics. What is clear is that everyone is busy. Everyone needs what they need quickly and affordably, whether thats information, products or deliveries.
But speed by itself is not enough, especially with the wide range of service providers available in practically every element of every industry. We make sure to focus on the challenges the customers are facing and solve those challenges. Theres no point delivering quickly if the products arent right, or if the volumes are suitable for their storage facilities. So, when we look at speed of supply, we look at Just in Time deliveries, we talk to our customers to learn exactly what they need and when they need it.
Customers challenges include creating a balance of standard and customised packaging too, with both types having a clear role. The one stop shop thats useful for brands today can reliably create and provide both, with the understanding of why the customised variations are required. This can be in response to special offers or limited editions, perhaps a seasonal variation of a popular product. By working with a packaging partner that understands this changing need within the parameters of a brand portfolio, technical solutions can be used.
Our design capabilities at Pont means that we can suggest bespoke elements like engraved closures, which are really popular in metal for jams and chutneys for our artisan food customers for example. Or perhaps we could provide a bespoke label for our amber glass bottles, which are ideal for premium personal care products. Then theres technical advice on what liners will help to protect the products. There are so many variations available, with different barrier properties and presentation elements, to have experts available in one place, that know the customer and know the products, its really valuable.
Taking responsibility
As a proud one stop shop, Pont knows that offering a broad service needs to be clearly defined to not be confusing. We firmly believe that having one dedicated point of contact makes it easy to customers to work with Pont. Its quicker, as customers know they just have to contact one person with whatever their packaging question is and theyll be able to answer it, or will take responsibility to find the person with the right information. The administration is a lot easier too, which is good for everyone, so details or orders and deliveries are easy to find. I believe it helps to build and maintain trust too, which is imperative. It goes back to everyone being busy; if you can trust your packaging partner to give you expert advice and deliver the packaging that you need, then you can focus on your core business.
But how does this focus on providing all from one hand help to support a circular economy? By keeping an awareness of each step of the supply chain, it allows for responsibility for sustainability to be integrated into the process. When services are segregated, its all too easy to say thats not my department, and for joined up thinking to get lost. When taking responsibility is valued, and when seeing the whole picture is seen as a worthwhile goal, we cannot help but see the environmental cost as part of the overall requirement.
Combining deliveries ticks the sustainability box as well as simplifying communication with one point of contact. Without the need to arrange and manage deliveries from different suppliers, a one stop shop allows for PET jars, HDPE closures, glass bottles and metal lids to all be combined into one order from one supplier, saving on transportation costs, the environmental impact of multiple deliveries, and the smoother management of one truck with everything a customer needs on board.
Taking responsibility is a mindset that creates a virtuous circle. This mindset is evident across Pont; were a family-owned business that been providing packaging for customers across Europe since that offers stability, weve learned to evolve, to see cycles of business over the years. We answer to each other and to our customers. We take care to understand business trends, and to see how our customers need our packaging service to evolve, but ultimately, were here to get great packaging to our customers exactly how they want it and that hasnt changed in over 120 years!
